The Eurasian eagle-owl is considered to be one of the largest owls in the world, with a wingspan of nearly two metres. They do well in most types of habitat providing there are available nesting spots and adequate prey. Fossil remains show the owl to have been present in the UK around 2,000 years ago with debate as to whether they have ever been native in the UK, and currently estimated to be up to 40 pairs now living wild as escaped captive-bred birds. Their size and distinctive ear tufts make them popular in falconry centres.
