River is a hybrid falcon (peregrine x saker). The first hybrid falcons were bred in captivity in 1971 in western Ireland after falconers Ronald Stevens and the Hon. John Morris housed a male saker falcon with a female peregrine not expecting them to mate. Since then genetically similar species of falcon have successfully produced young and hybrids are now quite common in the falconry world.
